Motorcycle ignition lock repairs

Motorcycle ignition repair by a locksmith deals with the lock side of the ignition: the barrel, the key and the steering lock. We free a stuck key, extract a broken one, service or replace a worn ignition barrel, and cut a fresh key. This is lock work, separate from engine and electrical repairs, and we will tell you if the fault belongs with a motorcycle mechanic instead.

Signs your motorbike ignition needs attention

On a motorbike, ignition trouble usually shows up as a key that needs jiggling to turn, a key that sticks when you try to remove it, or a barrel that feels gritty and stiff. Sometimes the steering lock will not release, or the key turns part way and stops. A worn key can wear the barrel, so the key and lock often need sorting together.

When you call, describe what the key and ignition are doing. We attend your bike, check whether the fault is the key, the barrel or the steering lock, and carry out the right repair or replacement. If the problem is electrical or mechanical rather than a lock fault, we will say so clearly so you are not paying for the wrong fix.

Motorcycle ignition problems we handle

Key won't turn

Often a worn key, a seized barrel or an engaged steering lock. We diagnose which and put it right on the spot.

Key stuck or broken in ignition

We free a stuck key or extract a broken piece from the barrel, then cut a replacement so you can ride again.

Jammed or worn barrel

Worn lock wafers and grit can seize the ignition cylinder. We service or replace the barrel so the key turns smoothly.

Steering-lock problems

A steering lock that will not release or a seized lock can strand the bike. We free and repair it, and match the key.

How our motorcycle ignition repair works

Inside your motorcycle ignition

The ignition barrel, or ignition cylinder, holds lock wafers that read your key. A worn key or a stuck key stops those wafers lining up, so the key will not turn. The steering lock can hold tension on the barrel too. If a broken key is left inside, careful key extraction comes first, then we repair the lock and cut a replacement key. The same key often also works the seat lock and fuel-cap lock, which we check as part of the job. This is all lock work, separate from the bike’s electrics.
